Sugar

Sugar is the primary alias of Copenhagen-based composer, producer and Fast Forward Productions co-founder Nikolaj Jakobsen. While Sugar’s sound may be best described as techno with its heart on its sleeve, his seemingly innate ability to conjure multiplicitous spaces within a single piece of music can’t be easily constrained by simple genre signifiers. Absorbing the powerful, playful and emotional intensity of the punk, hardcore and metal scenes that Jakobsen commited his earlier years to, it occupies a unique place in today’s electronic music landscape – one that Jakobsen has been instrumental in creating. 

It’s this sound that has seen Sugar DJ at some of the world’s best clubs, including Berghain, Basement NY, K41 in Kyiv and Georgia’s Bassiani, as well as extensively touring Europe and The Americas since that first release in 2018. Bringing the music of Copenhagen to an international audience is an essential part of the process, Jakobsen’s commitment and love for his home city cutting through everything he does. In 2015 he co-founded the booking and events agency Fast Forward Productions, in the process solidifying Copenhagen’s burgeoning fast techno movement through inclusive mega-raves and giving a home to many of its essential artists, including Schacke, Peachlyfe, Ezy, DJ Tool, Repro, Vixen, Funeral Future and Rune Bagge. His productions found their own home on Euromantic, who released his debut record “No Sex Only Feelings” in 2018 – the culmination of a marked increase in the intensity of his music-making that has yet to slow down. Further releases on Anetha’s Mama Told Ya, Hector Oaks’s KAOS, Luke Standing’s Blue Hour & Positive Source, Courtesy’s Kulør, Bassiani’s in-house label and his own Perfumery Recordings confirm a signature sound that remains refreshingly hard to pin down.
